Weak Lawsuits v. the Monrovia PD

Saturday, December 30th, 2006

A Molly R. Okeon article in the Pasadena Star explains how a racial discrimination lawsuit against the Monrovia police department might be thrown out of court for lack of evidence. Another lawsuit against the Monrovia PD (this one on account of alleged sexual orientation discrimination) goes to trial in April.

Another Year in Claremont

Saturday, December 30th, 2006

The Claremont Courier says 2006 “was a busy year in Claremont, and city commissioneres have been working hard to keep the city going.” Read Tony Krickl’s year-end review of Claremont’s commissions (Traffic and Transportation, Community Services, Planning, Architectural, Human Services, and Police) and decide for yourself. A month-by-month summary of goings on in […]

View the city’s slide show here (Power Point download); go to the developer’s website here.

Badly Named Development Initiative in Sierra Madre

Thursday, December 28th, 2006

Sierra Madre residents will vote on the so called “2-30-13″ initiative, which would drastically limit development in their city, in April. See Molly R. Okeon’s article in the Pasadena Star. Development issues define much of the politics of the San Gabriel Valley, and the ongoing battle over this local ballot measure is worth […]

More Glendor-a-ma

Thursday, December 28th, 2006

An Alison Hewitt SGV Tribune article details yet another chapter in the contentious world of Glendora politics:
A lawsuit by Glendora resident Gil Aguirre, who has been in an ongoing disagreement with the city over the fees for a proposed lighting district, accused the city of having illegal requirements to access public records. Among other things, […]

Pinching like the Grinch (plus anti-bear legislation!)

Wednesday, December 27th, 2006

Always hard to find much in the way of Duarte news, which isn’t a good sign for residents trying to keep an eye on things. In any event, Emanuel Parker of the Pasadena Star tells us why there are no Christmas lights at city hall this year and how the council just passed a […]

More on Rep. Miller and Monrovia

Wednesday, December 27th, 2006

Another William Heisel story in the LA Times about Representative Gary Miller contains a few more interesting tidbits about his past dealings with Monrovia (see my previous post).
Some of the people Miller worked alongside in Monrovia are watching the Rancho Cucamonga deal with interest. Pat Ward, the president of MetroGroup Realty Finance Co., attempted […]

Introducing: The Sierra Madre Cumquat

Saturday, December 23rd, 2006

If you glance down the right side panel of this blog, you will see a new link among our ever-expanding list of local sites of interest. Deserving of special note is the Sierra Madre Cumquat, serving up a hilarious blend of “HARD NEWS LITE.” I think you’ll agree that Jim Snider’s blog is […]

Bradbury Gets A Zipcode

Wednesday, December 20th, 2006

Buried deep within the recently passed Postal Reform Act:
SEC. 1009. ZIP CODES AND RETAIL HOURS. (a) ZIP CODES.–Not later than September 30, 2007, the United States Postal Service shall assign a single, unified ZIP code to serve, as nearly as practicable, each of the following communities: (1) Auburn Township, […]

Glendora Political Battles Finally Get Some Press

Wednesday, December 20th, 2006

This blog exists to shine a light into the often forgotten world of foothill city politics, if only to reveal some damn interesting stories. Local politics in Glendora, for instance, are chock full of petty hilarity and just plain outrageous goings on. (Which is not to suggest that there aren’t important underlying issues underneath it […]

Claremont: Crime, Kids, and Councils…UPDATED

Tuesday, December 19th, 2006

Claremont sum-up:
Crime, Kids and the PD
Jason Newell writes a Daily Bulletin article about “Claremont’s nationally recognized Youth Master Plan, a document that has helped to spur youth programs across the city.
Since the plan’s adoption more than a decade ago, Claremont has developed several innovative facilities and programs designed to help keep young people out […]

Congressman Walks into Monrovia’s Pawn Shop…

Wednesday, December 13th, 2006

William Heisel’s LA Times story yesterday on Republican congressman Gary Miller (R-Diamond Bar) contained some interesting tidbits about Monrovia’s current Mayor.
We should note that congressman Miller denies many of the allegations in the article, many of which are likely a tad overblown but still damning. What I am interested in, however, is […]

La Verne’s Non-Election

Tuesday, December 12th, 2006

Maybe readers would agree that La Verne is a pleasant, peaceful [sleepy?] place to live or even just to drive through. So maybe La Verne residents don’t see any need to make ripples in their placid pond. Jason Newell of the Daily Bulletin explains that since “the deadline passed to file paperwork to […]

Lucky Baldwin

Saturday, December 9th, 2006

If you enjoy beer, live in the San Gabriel Valley, and have never been to Lucky Baldwin’s British pub in Old Town Pasadena, you can thank me now for giving you a pleasant surprise. Not surprisingly, the Pasadena Star recently gave their Sierra Madre location (the Delirium Cafe) a positive review.
What caught […]
