Pomona City Manager Linda Lowry Chosen Over Lindsay Lohan

By Publius | March 6, 2008

Despite repeated pleas by the Foothill Cities blog, the Pomona city council chose another woman whose first and last names begin with the letters “Li” and “Lo”. See Monica Rodriguez’s Daily Bulletin article:

Interim City Manager Linda Lowry was appointed the city’s top administrator at Monday night’s City Council meeting.

City Attorney Arnold Alvarez-Glasman made the announcement immediately after council members emerged from closed session.

Nothing against Linda, but the feeling I have right now is kind of like the one I get when my favorite football team decides to “hire internally” to fill top management positions. Or when a team shuns a flashy free agent and decides to just go with their back-up. And then goes 7-9 the next year. But hey, I can’t imagine Li-Lo ordering city attorney Arnold Alvarez-Glasman to threaten us like her predecessor Doug Dunlap did. And who else was willing to step up to the plate? Every other person the job was offered to ran the hell away from it.

David Allen had a pleasant conversation with Linda recently, recounted in another excellent column:

She outlined goals: a methodical plan to fix streets - she said Pomona has never had such a plan, which is kind of shocking - as well as separate pushes to improve neighborhoods and give residents better service at City Hall.

Meanwhile, the city budget will require serious cuts, maybe 10 percent in some departments, to cure a chronic budget shortfall. This would seem to preclude major initiatives, although Lowry said there’s opportunity to rethink how departments are run.

May I be candid? Some of us are disappointed that after the council’s talk of hiring a big gun with a big vision, we got a nuts-and-bolts manager like Lowry.

That said, in this economy, with development stalled, and with a bureaucracy as disorganized as Pomona’s, maybe nuts and bolts is what the city needs.

We’ll see.

[Centinel] UPDATE: For those readers who may not be familiar with this “Lindsay Lohan” person, I have included pictures after the jump. Purely in the public interest.

Lindsay Lohan Will Not Be Pomona City Manager

Lindsay Lohan, not Linda Lowry, in case anyone may have been confused.

This may be a short-term gig, with the Mayyor heading to Sacramento and who knows who about to leave the Council!

What Pomona management level job isn’t a short term gig?
