Swearing in La Verne

By Publius | April 1, 2008

I think a good city slogan could be “Hey, at least we don’t *$&@ on you.” Read David Allen for more, including a a foul-mouthed story of La Verne:

. . . my former colleague Jason Newell told me about the language at a council meeting he attended circa 2004 in, of all places, La Verne, the Inland Valley’s answer to Mayberry.

Newell recalled that during the emotional meeting, a woman from a well-to-do foothills neighborhood dropped an F-bomb, telling the council: “Don’t ruin my park to build another (expletive) fire station.”

Mayor Jon Blickenstaff “jumped right in to say the city didn’t approve of profanity and would the speaker please watch her language,” Newell said. “A parent got right up with her kid and marched out.”

I had no idea La Verne was so edgy.

La Verne. It’s Spanish for “no balls”.

It depends how you look at it. Maybe three Fire Stations for a City with less than 40,000 is just another form of profanity.

I was there—-the actual quote from the the woman protesting the fire station was “Don’t f++k with mother nature” (referring to leave the park alone).

Wow, a man made park next to a concrete reservoir and several hundred houses is mother nature?

I recently came across an article and then a blog about “Swearing in La Verne,” and was taken aback that someone would be moved to such a level to use a four letter word during a council meeting.

La Verne, “…the Inland Valley’s answer to Mayberry…” as David Allen referred to this idyllic town, is what we pay the big bucks for. We moved here, to this not always convenient location, to send our kids to some of the best schools in the country - the world; to be safe - as I was told by a good source that we have no gangs here in La Verne; and to have a lovely place to walk our Labrador Retrievers.

And then, as quickly as the shock of the four letter word had passed, as I sat in my living room taking in the lovely blue sky, my ivy league neighbor just home on break for the summer, swelled his chest and as if in a contest, spit over the fence into my yard.

So, Mayberry we may be, but we can swear and spit with the best of them!
