The Art City: Monrovia (well one step closer to the dream)

By Frazgo | May 10, 2008

For those of you who missed it, Monrovia is home to several galleries featuring world renown artists (Michael Godard) as well as talented individuals who live the the city.  Those artists are also very active in the community on many levels including in the Monrovia Association of Fine Arts (formerly Monrovia Art Festival Association) that was founded some 48 years ago by artist Mildred Lapson and other Monrovians of the time.

MAFA has a few projects launching this year.  The first is the “Murals of the Masters” to  be painted through out Old Town Monrovia.  The Murals of the Masters has received support from city manager Scott Ochoa and funding for materials has been paid through the Monrovia Endowment for the Arts.  Talent has been provided by MAFA artists.

The first was completed earlier this week at the Kids Art Studio located at 128 E Lemon Avenue.  (A complete story on this particular mural can be found at Metroblogging LA). The painting is a loose replication of Van Gogh’s “Wheat fields and cypress”.  The formal unveiling and ribbon cutting will take place later this month in conjunction with the “Kids Art Walk” that will kick off the summer Art Walk Series hosted by MAFA in Old Town Monrovia.

Among the other projects MAFA is working on for this year is producing a brochure outlining the “Monrovia Art District” to make it easier for visitors to find all of the galleries and murals located in the community.

The photos are by me.  The mural does get bigger with a click.  As a final bit of disclosure I am on the MAFA Board (MAFA is a non-profit so they get all my spare time and I donate my time and pieces for auctions to help support them).

Oh AP…hang around me a bit and I’ll open your eyes to the art stuff.

Margaret Q…at some point y’all are gonna ask me to stop with the mural stuff so count on a few more posts as it rolls along.

As a patron of the arts (wife is professional artist and we know that’s an easy pursuit…), yea for Monrovia embracing art.

    Michael Goddard???? I cringe.

Look up “kitsch”, “self promoter”, “wannabe rock star”, and you may likely find a photo of Goddard.

(for further reading see Kincaid phenomenon)

$20.00 says his 15 minutes will be over by the end of this year and the gallery will be boarded up.

Segil Fine Art……now we can begin to say Monrovia embraces art.

To paraphrase M. Ellington, there’s only two kinds of art- good and bad.

See above if you need a stark example to help you as you begin a life of art appreciation.

By the way, bravo for Goddard for his success. I’d do the very same if I had his talent. There is plenty of room for kitsch and his is darn good.

whileyouwereart you make me laugh. “..begin a life of art appreciation”. Dude, I’ve been at it since middle school. As far as Godard goes he does what he does well. For Martini Artists I’ll take Rick Kess (a monrovian). For really fantastic low brow art “Coop” who happens to be married to my best friend from college.

Art is in the eye of the beholder. You buy what matches your soul not the sofa.

“art appreciation” statement was intended towards a general reader of the blog, not yourself.

Let’s tighten it up a bit and I’ll revise the sentence to say: “See above if one would like a stark example…”.

Wanna take me up on the 20 bucks? Time would be in your favor…….

I won’t get tired of the murals, and Laura Segil has some fine artists in her gallery.

whileyouwereart the whole stark contrasts works and that sums up well the styles and gallery range in town.
