Reignited Sierra Madre Fire and Monterey Park Police

By Centinel | May 14, 2008

Bill Coburn dropped in to give us the official story on both these issues. Apparently, there was a flareup above Sierra Madre:

Just spoke to Battalion Chief Mike Bamberger.  Here’s the scoop.  About 9:45 am, there was a small rekindled fire in the burn area.  Firefighter attacked it directly, and during mop-up, there were two minor injuries.  One of them required that the injured firefighter be airlifted out.  It is anticipated that he will be treated and released by the end of the day.

Regarding the presence of foreign law enforcement officers, Bill reports:

Just called SMPD and was told that Monterey Park is in town because of the Pedestrian Decoy program that was conducted.  Here’s the press release, it was discussed during last night’s City Council meeting, as well.

Sierra Madre Police Department Pedestrian Decoy Awareness Operation

The Sierra Madre Police Department will be conducting a pedestrian decoy awareness operation on Wednesday, May 14, 2008, beginning at 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. within the city of Sierra Madre.

The emphasis will be an education approach by law enforcement officers on the importance of stopping for pedestrians in a crosswalk.

Thanks to Bill Coburn for the info.

Unless they were handing out warnings all afternoon, the education was most likely a ticket. Pedestrian stings are fairly common. The commotion and concentrated law enforcement presence certainly brings a great deal of local attention to the efforts. Monterey Park must have had a busy week, helping in South Pas yesterday… http://www.sgvtribune.com/ci_9249321

Does anyone know how our two Sierra Madre firefighters are doing? I heard they suffered heat exhaustion and both were taken to the hospital. One fellow was airlifted to Huntington….the other man, Rich Snider was taken to Arcadia Methodist by ambulance.
Rich helped give the firefighter’s presentation last night at the city council meeting…..heads up that hill again this morning and ends up in the hospital.
    Get well soon guys.

How much did the “sting” cost, Bill?

    An e-mail from Chief Diaz:

“We used a total of 8 hours of overtime for a SMPD sergeant and one officer. The costs were charged to a State grant fund, not to our General Fund. The other personnel were either on duty or volunteered. Police Chief Jones Moy of the Monterey Park PD graciously donated the services of the four motorcycle officers.”

Forgot to mention - I have now posted on my home page the press release from the Chief that details the results of the operation.
