Assembly Speaker Karen Bass Remembers Sierra Madre

By Centinel | May 15, 2008

Sierra Madre got some love from Assembly Speaker Karen Bass in her swearing-in speech, yesterday:

Tomorrow, the governor will unveil his May budget revision.

By all accounts it will not be good news. We have to decide how we will address that news. We have to decide how we will come together to mobilize the incredible assets and resources at this state’s command to solve the budget crisis.

If we can mobilize our resources to respond to major disasters like Northridge and Whittier and Loma Prieta - we must be able to respond to the budget crisis.

The wildfires in Sierra Madre in April reminded us all too well of the infernos we faced in 2007.

The combination of economic recession, the mortgage meltdown and skyrocketing prices for food and fuel are having the same destructive force as an earthquake or fire.

When you lose your home, can’t feed your family, or can’t afford health care for your kids, it’s an earthquake.

When there is a disaster like that, an earthquake or a fire or a flood, leaders put their ideologies aside and step up and say “people are suffering - what do we do to alleviate the pain?”

Okay, who alleviates pain: doctors. Oh, you mean financial pain: um, insurance companies. You mean emotional pain? That would be shrinks or perhaps spiritual counselors. But since when does, “I’M IN PAIN” translate to “An elected official in Sacramento needs to mobilize an incredibly inefficient response to my very local pain by, I dunno, giving me money.” Think about the solutions the federal government came up with to “solve pain” in the wake of Katrina. Anyone remember those debit cards that were given away and then squandered on all sorts of ridiculous expenses?

The last person in the world that I want to “help me with my pain” is Karen Bass.

Centinel, you are obviously wise beyond your years…..by the way, how many years would that be?

Politicians are all about telling you they are here to solve “your” problems….I just want them to get out the way and let me solve my own problems.
