California Supreme Court Rules on Gay Marriage

By Centinel | May 15, 2008

Well, it’s not directly FC-related, but I figure this is a topic that is going to be bandied about in coming days (who knows, maybe at a Sierra Madre City Council meeting), so everyone get your knives out…

A deeply divided California Supreme Court said Thursday that California’s ban on gay marriage is not legal, a move that sent off wild cheers and celebration in San Francisco but one that will face new fights from opponents of same-sex marriage.

Under court rules, the ruling does not take effect for 30 days, lawyers involved in the case said, and opponents of gay marriage said they would ask the court to stay its decision pending an expected vote by the public in November.

“It benefits no one to redefine marriage for three to four months,” said Folsom attorney Andrew P. Pugno of ProtectMarriage.com, who said he would seek a stay while pursuing an initiative to amend the state constitution to ban same-sex marriage.

I’ll be interested to see how our state legislators (Portantino et al)  react to the decision.

My stand on gay marriage is that it should most definitely be made legal. Why should heterosexuals be the only group of people subjected to this primitive and obsolete institution?

Thanks for allowing me the opportunity to share.

I tend to agree with #1, I wonder how they will fell when the marriage falls apart and alimony enters the picture. Until now its been splitting the sheets and moving.

I’m for gay marriage…because I believe the government should not hinder upon personal freedoms that do not hurt others.

I’m in a small but growing camp in the Republican party.

Oh AP you aren’t the only one. Imagine my midwestern republican family members at my wedding. Two of my groomsman were a gay couple, The maid of honor and and bridesmand were lesbian. That’s what happens when you work retail a good diverse social circle. The folks from Duluth were just a little gun shy.

Portantino et al has to be for gay marriage. It would be too weird if not. Everyone should be entitled to get screwed over with a third party involved *Sacto) if they so desire it. How romantic.

I’m a “conservative” gay Democrat in Republicans clothing. lol. I swear, the straighties that can’t stand the idea of gay marriage just because they think it’s “sick and perverted” are, in reality, the sick ones if they don’t want other fellow human beings to be happy their own way. How perverted is that to wish unhappiness on people you don’t know? lol. They freaking swear that by allowing gay marriage that the minute the gay couples are married they’re going to have gay children and the whole world will be overrun by gays…lol. That’s the real fear behind everything in this matter. It’s the fear of a sort of gay gentrification. That very fear has been among people (especially most whites) during every influx of each ethnic group that are now in the U.S…I think not allowing gay marriage is a hate crime.

I personally don’t believe gays should be married (that is my choice, I don’t chose to get married, atleast to a guy anyways…lol) because I believe in what the bible says somewhat but that shouldn’t stop other gay people from getting married if they wan’t, should it? NO! If anything I learned from the bible is that we have free will, it doesn’t say in the bible “Let the government [throw a leash around your neck] and drag you around” It just says follow (obey) the laws of your government (something to that effect), I think government misinterprets the meaning of that part. lol.

As a hopeless romantic, I couldn’t be more pleased with the CA Supreme Court’s decision.

If one is a true Republican, one believes in not hindering other’s personal freedoms.

Now, a lot of people say “Doesn’t that just make you a Libertarian”? Well, I don’t want cocaine and heroin legalized.

[…] Larry Wilson! The California Supreme Court has overturned the gay marriage ban! Good on them, too. I’m not against gay marriage in the slightest bit. […]

There’s no such thing as a true Republican or a true Democrat or even true Green or Libertarian. There are infinite degrees between the most liberal and the most conservative on each and every issue. Most people who choose to align themselves with one political party or the other make a compromise and go with the party that tends to promote their veiws on what they feel to be important issues.
