More on Sierra Madre Fire Flare Up

By Centinel | May 15, 2008

So, yesterday’s flareup was swiftly suppressed.  This bit, though, couldn’t help but make me think we’ll need to redefine who the “dirts” in town are.

Giannone said citizens reported seeing the blaze in the 600 block of Mount Wilson Trail about 9:45 a.m. He said it spread to about an eighth of an acre before Sierra Madre firefighters knocked it down about 15 minutes later.

He said civilians helped by putting dirt on the flames.

“We’ve got to thank them, but we don’t recommend that because of safety,” he said.

Get it? Dirts? I crack myself up.

I’ve been told that Henore Letourneau of Mary’s Market was one of the citizen folks that helped with the fire suppression yesterday. Timing sounds about right, as I saw him looking for a parking space about 9:15 as I was coming down off the trail. If you have a minute, maybe you can stop by Mary’s and spend a couple bucks to say thanks…

Hey, just to clarify, since several folks have emailed: I was making a joke. Some very thoughtful people ran up to prevent the fire from spreading and kicked dirt on it. Thus, you could call them, without it being an insult, the “dirts.” There was no insult intended to anyone, and it had to be one of the more retarded jokes ever made. If you managed to be offended by that crack (and I can’t, for the life of me, see how any human being could be)…um, stop being offended because it’s all in your head. It’s not even a pun, so give me a break.
