George and Marilyn Brumder Trust PUSD
By Centinel | May 16, 2008
I used to think that people like this must be employed by the school system, but now I’m starting to wonder. The Brumder’s wrote this amazing letter to the Star-News:
State funding of our public schools is dramatically inadequate. Even without the recurrent budget shortfalls in Sacramento, we cannot expect state funding to increase significantly anytime soon. Though the Pasadena Educational Foundation raises significant funds each year for the schools, the unmet need remains great.
For the thousands of students in the schools right now, for their families and for the entire community, it is urgent that we immediately and significantly increase funding for our public schools.
We urge the superintendent and the school board, who presumably know the situation best, to take without delay a strong lead in identifying the most plausible solutions - A parcel tax? One or more bond issues? Both? And then building the support of the voters of Altadena, Pasadena and Sierra Madre who will be needed to implement these solutions.
We are confident that with strong leadership, the community will rise to the occasion. There is no time to lose.

Oh believe me, George and Marilyn, I’m positive that someone in PUSD headquarters is looking at all the options. But I’d be more interested in understanding why you think more money is going to make a difference. A valuable study for me would examine increases in spending over the past ten years, and see if they correlated to increases in performance in the district and at individual schools. Similarly, I’d like to see where that money went: did it go to computers, textbooks, new facilities, hiring more teachers? Or did it go to administrative expenses, special programs, and, I dunno, Target?
The school district is obviously never going to fund a study like that, and I don’t happen to have the thousands of dollars it would cost. So, maybe we’ll just wallow in darkness, praying that some day the government decides to be open and honest with us and provide information in a way that doesn’t entail an enormous information cost (aka someone going and requesting records at great expense of time and effort, which busy people don’t have).

The parents, teachers and children of Sierra Madre School will have a march today from Sierra Madre School to Kershing Court, from 2:30-4:00 to protest cuts in education. All citizens are encouraged to march in support of our children.

The local newspaper should print all of the PUSD income & expense data. Doing so does not infer a position on funding, it’s simply supplying information that all of us are interested in knowing.
It’s funny you mention Target. I have Pasadena HS as my designated donation fund. Target supposedly matches in donations whatever I spend using a Target VISA.

Wealthy, inbred Pasadena Old Money loves PUSD so much now that their kid are well past the age of being educationally abused by PUSD.
These people would be appalled if PUSD did to thier kids what the school district is doing to its students RIGHT NOW!
