Thursday, May 15th, 2008In a pseudo-update on The Shops at Santa Anita, Curbed LA reveals some equine affection:
Per the web site, the new mall will cozy up to a landscaped paddock garden where the kiddies can watch the midget riders ride the race horses. And instead of a self propelled trolley, a horse drawn trolley will pull your […]

Voters this June will have an opportunity to decide the fate of what may be the most important property rights initiative to ever appear on a ballot in California - Prop 98.
Drafted by the Howard Jarvis Taxpayer Association […]
The Great Debate: Prop 98, A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing
Wednesday, May 14th, 2008[Note: this is the first of three posts Wes will be contributing as part of the Great Debate]
Since the Supreme Court’s decision on Kelo vs. the City of New London in 2005, where the City condemned privately owned land in order to transfer it to another private entity as part of a comprehensive redevelopment plan, […]

One reason why Pomona doesn’t have it’s act together…
“Poor planning of Pomona is showing it’s face in my research on the Pacific Electric lines in North Pomona and around Ganesha Park.”
Heh. But who’s counting Garrett, who’s counting?
Friday Linkfest: 10 Reasons to Remember
Friday, May 9th, 2008There’s a million things I’d love to write about. Sadly, the sun goes down (and comes up) much too quickly. So, here’s 9 (count ‘em, 9!) links you really should take a look at…
Consultant Sees New Pomona: Pomona Needs More Than a Consultant
Tuesday, May 6th, 2008Reading this just makes me blanch:
At one time, commercial streets were thriving parts of cities such as Pomona, but suburban malls and changes in shopping habits have made the corridors tired and underproductive.
But a new wave of change could transform these thoroughfares into vibrant areas with some careful planning and preparation, a consultant told a […]
Believe It: One Carter/Stonehouse on the Auction Block
Monday, May 5th, 2008Hmm, this doesn’t exactly smell like a bidding war to me.
Azusa Seeing Official Flight?
Friday, May 2nd, 2008Hmmm:
A key figure in the city’s multiple redevelopment projects left his post with little explanation, officials said Tuesday.
The sudden departure of Robert Person follows the exit of Bruce Coleman, the city’s former economic and community development director. Coleman resigned April 17 to work for the city of Murrieta.
Person did not return phone calls seeking comment.
Businesses Must Serve Their City Masters
Thursday, May 1st, 2008Reading this quote from Ed at M-M-M-My Pomona made me cringe a little bit:
I’ve been looking at the ‘For Sale’ sign at the former location of the Brasserie Astuce restaurant, with increasing wonderment over what the Raymond Fong and his Redevelopment Team might bring in to generate much needed sales tax revenue for the city […]
Common Sense on Props 98 & 99
Wednesday, April 30th, 2008Convenient timing given Sir Eric’s latest piece. This just in from Paul Jacob of Common Sense:
Beware of enemies of property rights bearing pallid imitations of the real thing.
Californians face an alternative on the upcoming June ballot: protect their private property, or expose it to the continued attack of politicians and private entities seeking easy ill-gotten […]
The Coates Bicycle Saga: Why Do Businesses Exist?
Thursday, April 17th, 2008Reading over the comments beneath this post, I couldn’t help but wonder if folks aren’t overlooking a pretty fundamental question: why does a business exist?
To here some people tell it, they should be sales tax maximizers or they should be “thinking of the good of the community?” Last time I checked, entrepreneurs start businesses to […]
Monrovia Wilderness Preserve
Wednesday, April 16th, 2008Speaking of Monrovia…
Amanda Rice of the About Cambria blog recently cited Donald R. Hopper’s old article in Western City Magazine highlighting the fact that 8 years ago “Monrovia’s residents voted overwhelmingly to tax themselves to buy the last remaining open space in the adjacent foothills and hold it in trust as a wilderness preserve.” […]
Coates Bicycle Shop Bleg
Tuesday, April 15th, 2008I just had an interesting request from reader AA who sent in the following email:
A friend of mine knows the owner of Coates Bicycle Shop and recently told me a little bit about the current situation they are facing [possibly being blighted out of existence by the city of Pomona], but it mainly consisted of […]
The Return of the Photo Of The Day!
Monday, April 7th, 2008[The Stinkeye Express, Originally uploaded by Muzzlehatch]
It’s been nearly three months since the POTD has been run. (No, I wasn’t lazy, Centinel & Publius were doing stuff with the server.) Tomorrow is has two different important deadlines: the municipal elections in Arcadia and the public hearing for the San Gabriel Valley sector of […]
